Plants Donated to Schools and Non-Profits

Article by Carol Limaye

Traditionally, Sunshine Community Gardens donates the plants leftover from the plant sale to schools and non-profit organizations. Even though we did not run a plant sale this year, the board wanted to have plants available to give away as before. To make this happen, we purchased extra transplants at a deep discount and put out the word to schools and non-profits that plants were available. Priority was given to TSBVI, PEAS (Partners in Education, Agriculture and Sustainability) and New Day Community Gardens. In addition, Jim Willmann contacted the Central Texas School Garden Network. As a result, we gave 303 plants to schools, 102 plants to community gardens and 194 plants to non-profits such as Boy and Girl Clubs.

Code-of-Conduct Committee

Article by Kay McMurry

We are forming a committee to create a more comprehensive set of guidelines on garden etiquette and how to deal with conflicts between members of our garden and are looking for a few people to serve on it. Your participation counts towards your regular service hours. Our current conduct guidelines in the Site Rules consist of one paragraph:

  • This is a community garden. Other members are our neighbors. There should be no harassment, threats, verbal abuse or acts of violence by any person against any other person. Such acts should be reported to the Board. If necessary, proper authorities will be called. Any person committing such acts may have their membership terminated.

Our goal is to develop some guidelines for dealing with negative interactions that rise to the level of reporting and lay out some procedures for handling conflicts among gardeners. Please contact Marsha Riti (marshariti@gmail.com) or Kay McMurry (scg.plots@gmail.com) if you're interested in or have questions about serving on this committee.
